Momordica Charantia, or Kugua (bitter pumpkin) is a variety of pumpkin, which in its fresh form has a very bitter taste. Asians value it for its unique healing properties. Bitter pumpkin cleanses the blood, and its peel contains many useful substances. In its dried form, the peel of this pumpkin exudes an amazing aroma, and it is for this reason that the tea is placed in it, which then acquires its unique taste and aroma.
Kugua is very impressive. In fresh form it looks like a cucumber with large pimples. For tea production, the pumpkin is first cleaned, and only a thin peel is left. Then the raw tea materials are carefully put into the slightly dried kugua peel, and then dried all together until it is ready. After the drying process, the tea needs to 'mature' for two to three months. Most often the kugua variety is produced with Red Fujian teas, Oolongs or Shu Pu'ers. It is these teas that combine best with the unusual scent of pumpkin.
