This fragrant flower is one of the few that is used not only in traditional Chinese medicine, but also in official pharmacology. An extract made from the petals of the peony is part of many medicines. According to the Greek myth, the talented doctor Peon, a disciple of Aesculapius, cured people and gods with the help of an unknown drug. Once he even healed wounds of the god of the underworld, Hades, inflicted on him by Heracles in a fight. Aesculapius envied such skillful healing and killed Peon. However Hades, in gratitude for his salvation, turned the body of the young healer into a fragrant flower, which was named in his honor.
Peony flowers are one of the most important symbols of Chinese culture. They represent the male principle and strength. Peonies do not bloom for long – about 20 days at most, the rest of the year they accumulate strength. This is why its flowers are highly valued and are of particular importance. Brewed separately peony petals can be used as a sedative. But since this plant contains toxic substances, it is necessary to observe the dose strictly.
